The Day the Marker Dropped

How a childhood "mistake" became the mirror, monogram, & message of my brand & a reminder that every blemish can still become a masterpiece.

What she did that day... it changed everything.

The Echo

I was in the 5th grade, and I had entered a local poster competition about the environment. I remember that I won… I don’t remember much else. Not the slogan, the message, the layout… nothing.

Except for two things.

🟡 It was on bright yellow poster board.
đŸ•Šī¸ And in the upper left-hand corner, there was a flock of birds.

I had been working on the floor, which I preferred; more space, better perspective. When I finished, I stood up. And that’s when it happened:  The still uncapped black marker slipped from my hand and dropped directly onto the poster.

In the upper left-hand corner. It was obvious in its prominent placement.  There was nothing else there. And this quiet, perfectionist wallflower completely lost her salt. (AKA cried like a baby—but doesn’t “lost her salt” sound far more poetic than the red-faced, hiccup-filled sobbing that actually happened?)

Mrs. Quirk, one of my all-time favorite teachers, came over and asked what was wrong. I pointed through tears at the smudge and told her I had ruined everything.

She didn’t flinch. She didn’t coddle. She just said, Honey, I don’t see a wayward mark on your poster. All I see is an unfinished bird. So let’s finish it… and maybe give it some friends.

The poster won the competition and on the judge's remarks: "I really like the birds - nice touch!"

That moment embedded itself deep in my identity. She showed me how to create my way out of disappointment. To see what could still become. To take what felt like a mistake… and make it fly.

Unraveling ----> Rediscovery

Perfection had to be interrupted for identity to take shape. What I thought was failure became a flourish. What looked like the end of something... became the start of everything.

That one black smudge became the birthplace of a whole flock. It became a sacred nudge:

✍đŸŊ To choose creativity over control.
đŸĒļ To choose becoming over perfection.
🧩 To trust that maybe what feels disruptive is actually divine.

Years later, that same shape - that bird flourish - became the inspiration behind my Mirror & Masterpiece logo:

a mirrored flourish -  not in black, but in a rainbow gradient

Because this isn’t just a business. It’s a becoming. That “m”? It isn’t just a monogram: It’s a mark of mercy. A reflection of how our identity is more beautiful because of the places that once looked broken. A celebration of what happens when God mirrors His grace through our mess. The colorful motif represents our own coat of many colors given to us by our Father.

Reflection

Let’s take this deeper. What might the “marker drop” be in your own life right now?

🧠 Mind: What have you been calling a failure that might be an invitation to create?
❤ī¸ Heart: What old programming around perfection still whispers shame when plans shift?
đŸ’Ē Strength: How do you overcome the fear of doing it wrong again?
✨ Soul: What would shift if you believed your identity is shaped more by what God redeems than what you get right?

Your Holy Plot Twist

The same God who gave you your creativity can handle your mess. The God who gave you a purpose can work with a smudge. The God who began a good work in you isn’t shaken by what dropped.

đŸ–‹ī¸ I didn’t ruin anything. I dropped the marker. My life now celebrates a new story of grace over perfection; one where the flourish is colorful, the identity goes beyond my reflection, and now, my masterpiece life inspires others and wins the heart of the only worthy Judge.

Sacred Invitation

If this story stirred something in you, maybe it’s time to stop trying to erase what you think ruined it all.

Comment below and share your own marker drop moment & how you gave it wings.

Remember: The masterpiece is still unfolding. May you see every mark through mercy. May you trust your becoming. And may your story finish in a flourish.
